“Dear John” letter forces Cameron to go Number Two!

February 9, 2010

Some of you may recall the post from a couple weeks ago where I posed the question: Who will usurp the Number One spot from James Cameron’s “Avatar”? ….or something like that. Simply put, I wanted to guess which movie would knock “Avatar” off the coveted number one spot which it held since it’s release in December.

Well, the answer came this past weekend when Lasse Hallström’s “Dear John”, an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel starring Channing Tatum (“G. I. Joe”) and Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia!”) took out Pandora. It started on Friday and carried on through the weekend. At this point, everyone who wants to see “Avatar”, already has or were busy with the Super Bowl. Right? Which leads me to believe that the audience demographic that made “Dear John” numero uno could quite literally be all over the place.

Fade to White….

Turns out when I guessed Martin Scorcese’s “Shutter Island” (which opens February 19th in the U.S.) I was waaaay off and underestimated the power of young heterosexual first love between two beautiful white people….as if we’re ever given ANY other kind!

Now, I haven’t seen “Dear John” yet but I’m somewhat hesitant to since Hallström’s previous films (“The Cider House Rules” & “Chocalot” ) came across as somewhat bland to me. So, I can say much to the film except “Thanks!”  While everyone was celebrating the Saints victory Sunday night, I was basking in the laptop glow from the box office report that told me we can begin to see the overrated “Avatar” slowly slide down the weekend totem pole.

That is, until Oscar night on March 7th. For the first time ever, I’m actually dreading a night that is bigger to me than the Super Bowl is to others. And once again, I’m curious….

Did you see “Dear John” opening weekend? If so, what’d you think?

Have you seen “Avatar” yet? Is it out of your system or will you be returning to Pandora for more?

I have no plans to see Dear John. Nope. None at all.
