This Week on DVD & Bluray (07-06-10)
There are a few goodies mixed into this week’s DVD and Bluray releases. A Single Man was nominated for several Academy Awards (including Colin Firth for Best Actor). Brooklyn’s Finest is a star-studded cast brought together in a multi-threaded story of crime in Brooklyn. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the Swedish film adaptation of the widely-popular Millennium series of books (there is an American adaptation waiting in the wings). In addition to these, check out some great Buster Keaton re-issues and recovered lost short films. Enjoy!

I’m really looking forward to seeing A SINGLE MAN – one of the few from the major categories I didn’t see before Oscar night. I still haven’t seen a trailer of the film but listened to an interview with Colin Firth on NPR’s Fresh Air. They played a clip from the film, where he is given the news that his lover has just died, and it was… intense.
I saw MEN WHO HATE WOMEN…er….I mean…THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO – English language title – every other language has a direct translation of the original Swedish title. Stieg Larson steadfastly refused to change the title, but since he’s dead I guess his heirs care more about making $ in the (puritanical?) English speaking countries than honoring his wishes. When it was over, I thought the film was good, but not great. But I found that I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. That means a lot to me. I want to see it again. There’s quite a bit of social criticism in the subtext.
I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the Hollywood version. I hope whoever makes it is brave enough to keep some of the grit and ugliness in it. I’m sure the lead actress will be less…well…butch. I bet Fincher or Jonathon Demme will direct. Ha – just looked it up on IMDB – Fincher!
I loved A Single Man and highly recommend it. The beautifully touching story, superb acting, and brilliant styling by Tom Ford… one of my favorites from last season.
