COMING SOON: August 2011
August 3, 2011
Well, this is it! The final month of Cinematic Summer 2011 is upon us. It’s been pretty good so far (remember, it could be worse), but personally, I’m looking forward to what the fall films will bring (and the cooler weather) after the Labor Day weekend is over with. Until then, you can bask in cool theatrical A/C to escape the August heat. This is the “anything goes” month, where you’ll find all kinds of movies being thrown in the air, to see what will make a hit. Beyond the usual limited released indies and docs, there are a handful or remakes (“Fright Night”), reboots (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” & “Conan the Barbarian”) and sequels of “Final Destination” and “Spy Kids”. I’m only looking forward to a couple of those though.
Instead, I want to see what director John Sayles and Chris Cooper come up with as they reteam for “Amigo”, and then there’s Zoe Saldana bringing the action in “Columbiana”. Early buzz bodes well for both “Sienna” and “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”, but we’ll see what happens. Check out the list for yourself (IMDB links are provided below) and figure out which films are worth your time.

The photo all the way at the top is of the newly-reopened The Patio Theater, located in the northwest side of Chicago. If you’re local and haven’t checked it out yet….do so! The photo is taken by local artist, Gordon McAlpin, whose comic strip, Multiplex, is full of relatable moviegoing characters.
