This Week in DVD & Bluray (05-25-10)
Rough week this week! There are a couple of “big ticket” releases (The Road and Dear John), a massive HBO TV season (True Blood Season Two), and one under-the-radar indie-comedy (Mystery Team). The big theater releases are getting bigger and Summery-er every week, so it’s tough pickins on the rental shelves. Hopefully there’s something in here for you!

Go forth and conquer the video stores, Netflix queues, and Redboxes near you!
Finally I can see THE ROAD! It didn’t play anywhere within a two hours drive of me, and it seems like it’s taken forever for the DVD release. Of course now that the weather’s been so hot and sunny I’m totally not in the mood for bleaker than bleak. Sigh.
you can watch a bleak film indoors and then relish the beautiful (yet short) summer weather, something you can’t during those “other’ months. there’s also a nice Criterion of John Ford’s “Stagecoach” out today too!
Sweet! I love STAGECOACH! I’ll definitely put it in my queue! So many great characters – the drunken doctor, the mild-mannered whiskey salesman, the corrupt banker, the conservative cavalry wife, the prostitute run out of town by the women’s league, the Southern gentleman, the marshall, the not-too bright driver, and of course John Wayne! – and all thrown together for one stagecoach ride through dangerous Apache territory! You gotta love that. I wish I coulda been a fly on the wall for that pitch meeting!
The image I always remember from that film is the shot where we’re introduced to John Wayne. I love that shot, the way it goes out of focus for a split second. And this was his breakout role so that’s the shot that largely introduced him to the world. Ah…praise youtube, here it is:
May want to double-check that. Our usual DVD sources say nothing about a “Stagecoach” Criterion release. Also, it’s not available on Netlix yet.
Actually….Stagecoach Criterion is out as of May 25th. http://www.criterion.com/films/980-stagecoach
It’s also avail. for purchase on Amazon and Overstock. Netflix does not always have every Criterion release (as well as some studios, “Edge of Darkness” will be released in June) when they street.
Well, have fun buying it?
