Trailer Tuesday (10-19-10)

October 19, 2010

There is quite a variety of films showcased here this week. Not just in genre but also in scope and size. From kidnapping, to the paranormal, to trolls, a film about car-wreck as well as comic geeks, here’s a look at what films will be coming soon….

All Good Things

Ryan Gosling has a couple film’s coming out soon, one is the controversial “Blue Valentine”, and the other is this new film from director Andrew Jarecki. The film is inspired by the life of Robert Durst (played by Gosling) and tells the story about an heir to a New York real estate fortune whose wife (Kirsten Dunst) disappears. It also stars Frank Langella, Kristen Wiig, Phillip Baker Hall, and Diane Venora. The movie was originally supposed to come out in July of 2009 but Magnolia Pictures and the Weinsteins decided to hold off for some reason. That never bodes well but I do like Gosling and Karecki brought us the acclaimed doc “Capturing the Friedmans”, so, I’m interested. Expect it to be available on VOD on November 5th and then to open in theaters on December 3rd.

Restless

Director Gus Van Sant knows drama well and his choices are always interesting, this appears to be one of those choices. Here’s a story involving a ghost of all things. Whatever Van Sant’s approach is, it looks interestingly understated. Now we have a brand new trailer for the film and while I’m not sold yet, I am interested. Written by first-timer, actor Jason Lew, “Restless” stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and after the acclaim she received in “The Kid’s Are All Right”, I’d like to see more of her work. The film should open on January 28th, 2011.

The Troll Hunter

This recent Norwegian has been getting some buzz lately with its vérité style and, well, giant trolls. While I’ve grown tired of the found footage/handheld approach, this still has my curiosity. Is it more than just a creature feature? Is there government conspiracy involved? I don’t wanna know, until I see it next year on the big screen.

Wrecked

Adrien Brody has had quite the year. We seen him in the sci-fi thriller, “Splice” and also in sci-fi action with “Predators”. He was also in the recent direct-to-DVD remake “The Experiment”, and soon we will see him in the upcoming mystery “Wrecked”.  Brody plays a guy (literally his character is called Man) who wakes up from a car crash covered in blood with no memory, but his situation leads him to believe that he’s a fugitive bank robber. I’m interested in the premise already. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t really do a whole lot for me, but I do like Brody (after all, he is the youngest actor to win an Oscar), so we’ll see what comes of this. No release date yet, but look for it to come crashing your way at some point in 2011.

Paul

Greg Mottola (hw directed “Superbad” & “Adventureland”) has a new movie coming out called and it’s called “Paul” and it looks like a blast. The film is about two comic book geeks (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, of “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”) who embark on a road trip across America, when they discover an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) at Area 51. The movie also stars: Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Sigourney Weaver, Jane Lynch, Bill Hader, as wel as the one-two punch of John Carroll Lynch and David Koechner. It comes out in 2011, in the UK on February 18th and then in the states on March 18th.
