This week finds an overflowing variety that should have something for everyone. Animation for the family (“Gnomeo and Juliet”), sci-fi for tweens (“I Am Number Four”) and for those craving a study in technological singularity, check out “Transcendant Man”. For Memorial Day weekend, there are some Special Editions of “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals”, as well as Oliver Stone’s masterpiece “Platoon”, all new to Bluray. Coinciding with the Indy 500 (also this weekend), you have the choice of John Frankenheimer’s “Grand Prix” with James Garner or try to catch up with Steve McQueen in “Le Mans”. Criterion fans are in for a treat, as two classics that couldn’t be more different from each other are released. Chaplin’s boldest film, “The Great Dictator” and Andrei Tarkovsky’s mind-bending adaptation of Stanislav Lem’s novel “Solaris”. As usual, the highlighted films link to our reviews.
