This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (01-24-12)

 

This week there are some great selections to choose from….and I’m not just talking the boxing robots of “Real Steel”! Getting quite a bit of worthy award buzz, especially for screenplay, is “50/50” a film which made our Top Ten Films of 2011 list. You may have heard it referred to as “the cancer comedy” but don’t leave it at that and certainly don’t let it turn you off, since the movie is certainly much more than that. “Restless”, the latest from director Gus Van Sant is out as well – I bet you didn’t even know he came out with a film last year – and while I haven’t heard much positive response to it, I’m still slightly interested since it stars Mia Wasikowska. Another film I plan on catching up with is “The Whistleblower”, an “inspired by actual events” thriller set in 1999 Bosnia involving sex traffiking, starring Rachel Weisz, Monica Belluci, Vanessa Redgrave, and David Strathairn. The variety of releases that are new to Blu-ray is interesting, with some classics from Woody Allen and Alfred Hitchcock, as well as some Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor comedies.

 

 

The coolest release though is the Criterion Collection of the original “Godzilla” (a.k.a. Gojira) which is sure look great on Blu-ray and have some great Special Features.
