This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (01-29-13)

In case you missed it, (I know I willingly did) another one of those “Paranomal Activity” movies came out last week. If you missed it then, you can now watch in the comfort of you own home. You can even set-up a camera and record yourself watching it, just to see what happens. I’d rather spend time with “Seven Psychopaths”, especially when the last name of some of those psychos are Walken, Rockwell and Harrelson. It also helps that this is the latest film from writer/director Martin McDonagh (“In Bruges”). And if neither of those do anything for ya, you can always check in at the “Hotel Transylvania”, one of two Adam Sandler/Adam Samberg joint efforts.

Also out this week is a thriller that immediately flopped last fall,  “The Cold Light of Day” starring Henry “Superman” Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver. That’s right. I know. You’ve never heard of it. Speaking of Willis (a guy who will be everywhere this year), all four previous “Die Hard” movies are getting re-released on Blu-ray in a nifty collection. Of course, this will never be a complete collection if Willis keeps making alleged John McClane movies (the latest hits theaters February 14th).
One notable film new to Blu-ray this week: Ridley Scott’s 1977 historical film, “The Duelists” starring Harvey Keitel, Keith Carradine, Albert Finney, Edward Fox and the late Pete Postlethwaite (in his film acting debut). Quite a cast. It’s a film that’s often compared to Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon”, as it both takes place in the same era, but this one is based on a short story by Joseph Conrad. I’ve never seen either, but I plan on correcting that.
Also out this week is “Citadel” (also avail. on VOD) a film that premiered almost a year ago at SXSW, where it won the Midnight Audience Award winner. Check out this synopsis of the horror thriller directed by Ciaran Foy, “An agoraphobic father teams up with a renegade priest to save his daughter from the clutches of a gang of twisted feral children who committed an act of violence against his family years earlier.” Sold. See the trailer below.
That’s it for this week! Enjoy the rundown!
