This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (02-26-13)

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest masterpiece “The Master” is now out on DVD/Blu-ray! See it and determine which group you’ll be in – those who despise it or those who champion the film. If you haven’t checked this film out yet, do yourself a favor and find out why Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were nominated for Oscars and figure out why the Academy was confounded by the film. Speaking of confounded, there’s “Holy Motors” the latest from French filmmaker Leo Carax starring the likes of Kylie Minogue, Eva Mendes, Edith Scob and an amazing performance (or performances rather) from Denis Lavant. It’s a surreal, almost unexplainable film about a man who takes on multiple personas and interacts with multiple people in bizarre and touching ways. If you want to experience something completely different, this is it. And then “The Loneliest Planet” from director Julia Loktev is quite a trip as well. In fact, it centers on a guided hiking trip that a young engaged couple take in the Georgian wilderness and an encounter that alters the course of their journey.
There are a handful of other genre pictures out this week worthy of your time, but these three are the standouts. Previous reviews will be highlighted below. Enjoy the Rundown….
