This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (10-16-12)

October 16, 2012

There are two movies out this week that you probably haven’t seen, one is good and one is awful. I feel compelled to bring attention to both. The good one is 2009’s “Last Ride” with Hugo Weaving, which had a limited run in the States this past summer. It’s a sparse, harrowing drama taking place in the Australian outback, that follows a road trip taken by a boy and his violent father. Stay there and don’t go to Chernobyl for the lame horror flick “Chernobyl Diaries” (the only movie I rated “zero stars” so far this year) which is populated with stupid American tourists (how original) tactlessly visiting a place where real devastation occurred. You’re better off traveling to Europe with the crew from “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” in what surprisingly turned out to the best of those animated features so far.

Also out this week, the latest from writer/director Wes Anderson “Moonrise Kingdom” is finally out. Watch this sweet and whimsical coming-of-age tale again and for the first time. If you’re not sold on seeing one of the best movies of the year, see Bill Murray’s tour below! “Neil Young Journeys” is another documentary directed by Jonathan Demme, focusing on the musician and a recent tour of his.

Those who have a 3D television at home will now be able to watch James Cameron’s “Avatar” the way its intented to be watched. For the first time, the sci-fi epic will now be available for home viewing in the format it was filmed.

New on Blu-ray: the 20th anniversary of “A League of Their Own” and a couple of dramas from the 60, directed by two recently deceased directors , Alan J. Pakula (“Sterile Cuckoo”) and Sydney Pollack (“Slender Thread”). Two other dramas new to Blu-ray, Robert Wise’s 1950 drama “Three Secrets” and 1948’s “Letter From an Unknown Woman” Starring Louis Jordan and Joan Fontaine.

Finally, if you’re looking to catch up on some horror movies, here’s a couple Collector’s Editions of some seldom seen movies, directed by Roger Spottiswoode (“Terror Train”) and Tobe Hooper (“The Funhouse”). Nothing like bad horror movies to boost the Halloween season.
