The Week in DVD & Bluray (03-09-10)

March 8, 2010

It’s a good week for DVD and Bluray releases if you’re tweaking to see some of the Oscar nominees you missed in the theater!  Good news!  There are two Best Picture nominees coming out on DVD and Bluray, as well as a few other “gems”…

Up in the Air (2009) – DVD & Bluray

After such films as “Thank You for Smoking” and “Juno”, writer-director-producer Jason Reitman delivers “Up in the Air”.  The film centers on Ryan Bingham, a travel-addict businessman who lacks the desire to connect with any other human on a personal level.  When his company has decided to ground all travelling employees, Bingham is forced to interact with those in his life.  The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire (2009) – DVD & Bluray

If I never have to type that title again, I’ll die a happy man.  An unlikely cast of actors and crew come together to produce one of the most celebrated films of 2009 in “Precious”.  The story focuses on Clarice “Precious” Jones, a horribly underprivileged teenage girl from Harlem who must fight against all the obstacles in her life to try and make something of herself.  “Precious” was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture.

Other DVD & Bluray releases for the week of 03/09/10:

–        The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009) – DVD & Bluray – The long-awaited sequel to Troy Duffy’s 90s cult-classic “The Boondock Saints”.

–        Old Dogs (2009) DVD & Bluray – Oh yeah!  Robin Williams and John Travolta play two business partners who find themselves in the middle of an adventure when they’re given the responsibility of caring for twin 7-year olds.  Tread lightly…

–        Capitalism: A Love Story (2009) – DVD & Bluray – Michael Moore is back with another politically motivated piece of documentary entertainment.  This particular “non-fiction” piece centers on the recent financial meltdown in the US.

–        Planet 51 (2009) – DVD & Bluray – Computer animated science fiction Shrek look alike starring the vocal talents of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Gary Oldman and Seann William Scott.

–        The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) – DVD & Bluray – Limited release drama about a French journalist who is stuck in an Iranian village, and takes the time to learn the stories of a local.

–        Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (2009) – DVD & Bluray – Based on a true story from Japan, Richard Gere stars in this film about a man and his relationship with an abandoned dog.

–        Breaking Bad: Season 1 – (Bluray)

–        Breaking Bad: Season 2 – (DVD & Bluray)

–        Walker, Texas Ranger: Complete Series – (DVD)

That should give you plenty of home theater fodder for the week!  As always, go forth and conquer the video stores, Netflix queues, and Redboxes near you!
