Trailer Tuesday (04-19-11)

April 19, 2011
Most of the trailers here are pretty impressive and all of them are films that many are anticipating. Here are five movies to take note of, in no particular order….

MEEK’S CUTOFF

From Oscilloscope comes another film pairing Michelle Williams and director Kelly Reichardt (their last film together was the critically lauded “Wendy & Lucy” ) and it looks to be an indie western set in 1845, during the earliest days of the Oregon Trail.  It looks amazing, like the kind of Westerns I long for. I’m diggin’  the moody and mysterious atmosphere of it all. The story? Three families hire Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood) to lead them on a troubled journey over the Cascade Mountains.  Nuff said. It also stars another “Wendy & Lucy”  alum, Will Patton as well as  Zoe Kazan, Paul Dano, Shirley Henderson, Neal Huff, Tommy Nelson, and Rod Rondeauxn.  The movie already has a limited release as of April 8th, so look for it in an art house theater near you or try VOD or iTunes.

COWBOYS AND ALIENS

By now, you know that there’s another Western coming out on July 29th! It stars James Bond and Indiana Jones and there’s some sci-fi thrown in (as you can see in the title). I’m no prophet but I reckon this will be THE summer blockbuster hit, or at least it should. This is the latest trailer, probably the last before it gets released and it does give a little more details but nevertheless, I still eagerly anticipate this one from director John Favreau.

CASA DE MI PADRE

How ironic. This almost feels like another Western, except we go South of the Border for something we’ve likely never seen before. A Spanish-language comedy starring Will Ferrell, Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Efren Ramirez, and Genesis Rodriguez, directed by Matt Piedmont and written by script by Andrew Steele. This is the story of Armando (Ferrell) and his journey to save his father’s farm while fending off feared Mexican drug lord Onza (Bernal). The English-subtitled trailer delivers the novella drama and assured laughs, as it promises us “cigarettes!”, “slaps!” and “special effects!” The film does not have a release date, but I definitely look forward to it.

ABDUCTION

Attention Team Jacob fans! OMG! A new film with hunky wolf-boy, Taylor Lautner! Maybe it should be called “Ab-Duction’ instead? It’s a thriller directed by John Singleton (“Boyz in Da Hood”), revolving on a young man who is out to uncover the truth after finding what is presumably (and laughably) a missing persons photo of him. It seems like it would be rather hard to swallow with everything we see here in the trailer, it still has my interest in a preposterous action/adventure sorta way. It also boasts an interesting cast with Lilly Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Danny Glover, Alfred Molina, Michael Nyqvist, Maria Bello and Jason Isaacs. Some of those scenes with Bello and Isaacs had me sold right there. Look for the movie to hit the ground running come September 23rd.

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

I hate to get my expectations too high, but for a movie that I had none whatsoever for, this trailer earned my attention! I find it interesting though how Fox only name-drops FX giant Weta and not the director or any of the actors. Ah well, you know there will be another trailer soon and plus, we also know the REAL stars of such of film….”damn dirty apes!”  While, the science mumbo-jumbo set-up is cool here, what I can’t get outta my head are some of the mire unsettling images of ape interaction with humans: an ape watching at two humans sleep at the foot of their bed, unbeknownst to anyone…..creepy. And that scene where a mess of apes are seen swinging in trees above what seems like a residential area…..creepy. However it winds up, it looks more interesting than Burton’s mess. Get ready for the apes to rise with James Franco, Freida Pinto, Tom Felton, Andy Serkis, Brian Cox, and John Lithgow, come August 5th.
