This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (11-15-11)

We live in a time when a movie starring supposed movie stars, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, bombs at the box office. Ouch! Would it have been better if “Larry Crowne” wasn’t directed by Hanks? Was it an awful script? Since I haven’t seen it, I can’t provide an answer. Another movie from this summer that you probably didn’t see is Mike Mill’s “Beginners”, an endearing, funny, and poignant movie that is certain to be in my year-end Top Ten list. Look for Christopher Plummer to earn a Best Supp. Actor nom and maybe even finally land his first Oscar. Let’s see what other releases warrant your attention and time….
Criterion has giving their special treatment to Jean Renoir’s “The Rules of the Game” and Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy (Blue, White, & Red), all films I’ve wanted to catch up with. I also plan on catching up with “Bellflower”, an American indie film that has been called “a violent, apocalyptic love story” and was shot with a low-budget in Ventura, California.
There are some notable (and curious) new to Blu-ray titles out this week. Yet another release of “Evil Dead II” is upon us, this time in a 25th Anniversary Edition. I’m unsure how it differentiates from previous releases of the cult classic. For those of you who didn’t know that Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed” was actually a remake, you can check out “Infernal Affairs” for yourself and take a look at the original. It looks like 10-time Oscar winner (including Best Picture) “West Side Story” is celebrating 50 years with an attractive new collection. Including the talent of: Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise, Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, Stephen Sondheim, and Leonard Bernstein.
