This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (03-06-12)
March 6, 2012
This is one of the most bizarre new release weeks I’ve seen in some time. The variety here is so random and all over the place. From the new releases to the oddball new-to-Blu-ray titles, this is one week where anything goes. The best example is the trailer you’ll find below (no really). So, let’s begin with the three movies I’ve seen, yet still haven’t reviewed. “Immortals” is the weakest link of the three; therefore, I’d watch “Like Crazy” for its honest portrayal of an early twentysomething couple who use their hearts instead of their heads, and “The Skin I Live In” a very twisted obsession/revenge thriller directed by Pedro Almadovar. If you’ve been achin’ to cut loose – now you can, in the comfort of your own home, courtesy of the recent “Footloose” remake! I haven’t seen it yet, but know some who actually enjoyed it. So, I’ll eventually check it out one day – while I’m at home….folding laundry. Also out this week is the latest from Al Pacino, you know, the own where he falls for a female Adam Sandler? Say it isn’t so, Serpico!
Now, about those Blu-ray releases….First, Universal has baked a birthday cake for itself and instead of candles they’re lighting up a handful of well-known movies, from “The Deer Hunter” to “The Nutty Professor” – talk about range. Not sure if they’re out with any special bells and whistles, but at least the transfer should be nice. We also have a double whammy from Demi Moore, during her Skinemax period, with the adaptation of Michael Crichton’s “Disclosure” and “Striptease”, and along those lines, there’s also “9 1/2 Weeks”, known as prime manipulative sleaze from the 80s. Classing up the joint is Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in Hitchcock’s “To Catch a Thief” from 1955. James Cameron will be happy to know that “Ferngully: The Last Rainforest” is now out. Destined to filed under: Who Asked For This – is John Frankenheimer’s “Reindeer Games” starring actor Ben Affleck. And speaking of Affleck, the director/actor that is, he felt the need to put together an “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” of his Oscar-nominated Boston heist thriller.
As for me, I plan on delving into Season One of “Game of Thrones”, the award-winning HBO medieval fantasy series, based on the best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels.
Well, that’s one packed week. Links to previous reviews are highlighted below.
