This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (11-13-12)

November 13, 2012
There’s no gettin’ around it – the holidays are upon us! Between now and the end of the year, you can count on some hefty Tuesday releases. The big one this week is “Brave”, an animated feature I enjoyed but it still felt like the first Disney movie to come from Pixar. I anticipate finally seeing Jean-Luc Godard’s dark comedy “Weekend” from 1967, which is getting the Criterion treatment, it’s a film that’s been floating in that gaping hole of my movie-watching. A documentary I plan on catching up with is “The Queen of Versailles”, about a wealthy family who build the most expensive home in the U.S. and then feel the burn of the economic crash. Looks to be both an appalling and uncomfortably humorous examination of greed.
Another recent release worthy of your time, would be Julie Delpy’s sequel “2 Days in New York”. If you enjoyed her first film, which she co-wrote, starred in and directed, you’ll like this one too. A couple of others that didn’t do so well is Oliver Stone’s “Savages”, about the drug trade, and “The Watch” which suffered from bad-timing.
New to Blu-ray this week are two totally different movies from the 80s, “Empire of the Sun” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, both great in their own right. There’s also a ginormous “Lawrence of Arabia” set in celebration of the classic film’s 50 years and it looks amazing. And if you’re looking for some undeniable laughs, you can’t go wrong with a master, “The Incredible Mel Brooks: An Irresistible Collection of Unhinged Comedy” (what a mouthful!)
