This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (06-11-13)

The last of the major studio releases of January comes out this week with MTV Films “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”, distributed by Paramount Pictures and MGM. Originally intended to come out ten months earlier, this fantasy/horror-adventure/comedy (released theatrically in 3D IMAX) received mostly negative reviews and flopped at the box office. Still, I bet there’ll be a sequel. “Snitch”, the first of four movies (so far, to date) starring Dwayne Johnson, released in February and the crime drama (with a dash of requisite action, since it stars The Rock), which received mixed reviews, also comes out this week. I haven’t seen either of them (eventually/maybe), but I did see Sam Raimi’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” and thoroughly enjoyed the prequel to “The Wizard of Oz”, unlike other viewers who felt the movie was miscast and not that magical. I disagree. Raimi made a fun and funny movie (with a dash of scary) that expanded a magical world of Oz for a new audience. It was the first theatrical release that I thoroughly enjoyed this year.
New on Blu-ray this week is a 40th Anniversary of “Enter the Dragon” and Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries” – can two movies ever be so different from each other?
