Trailer Tuesday (08-03-10)
August 3, 2010
The Fall film season in the States is generally considered to be right after Labor Day till just before Thanksgiving. It’s also generally the time when studios start dropping some award contenders (but more will come toward the very end of the year) and some thrillers. Here’s a handful that’s really just a glimpse of what we’ll see in theaters after the dog days of summer.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
There has long been talk of a sequel to Oliver Stone’s award-winning film from the late 80’s. It’s fitting since the concept of “Greed is Good” is unfortunately a timeless concept. Of course, it would never be appropriate to not have Michael Douglas return to his Oscar-winning role and here he is, freshly released from jail to the supporting cast of: Shia LeBeouf, Carey Mulligan, Josh Brolin, Susan Sarandon, Charlie Sheen and Frank Langella. Originally scheduled to come out this past April, we’ll see how well it does come September 24, 2010.
The Social Network
A movie about Facebook? Really? That’s exactly what I thought at first but the more I read up on it, the more I was interested. Especially when I heard writer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) and director David Fincher (The Fight Club) was involved. While there have been other teaser trailers, this one gives us our first look at the live-action within the film, while maintaining the dark overtones established by Scala & Kolacny Brothers piano-choir cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”. I may just be “friending” this movie when it comes out. It stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield (the future Spider-Man), Joseph Mazzello, and Armie Hammer. It’s set to open later on October 1, 2010.
Stone
Edward Norton and Robert DeNiro team up again (last seen together in 2001’s “The Score”) for a film I can’t quite figure out whether or not it’s gonna be worth my time. DeNiro plays as a seasoned corrections officer who must deal with a scheming inmate (Edward Norton in corn rows!) and his girlfriend (Milla Jovovich) days before his retirement. I like all three of these actors, so it’d be nice to see this work out but the trailer doesn’t have me convinced yet. It’s set to come out on October 8th, 2010.
The Company Men
The film studies the effects of corporate downsizing on families and communities. Ben Affleck plays a white-collar corporate employee who, after losing his six-figure salary, is offered a job installing drywall from his blue-collar working brother-in-law, played by Kevin Costner. The film showcases an ensemble cast including: Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemay DeWitt, Maria Bello, and Craig T. Nelson. It currently has a release date of October 22, 2010.
Faster
The story of an ex-convict (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) avenging his brother’s death after they were double-crossed during a heist, may not seem to original but this provides an opportunity for The Rock to get back into action. After playing “The Tooth Fairy” and other family friendly fare, this will be a welcome return to the kinds of films many of us wanna see The Rock doing. Columbia College grad, George Tillman Jr, directs a film that also stars Moon Bloodgood, Billy Bob Thornton, Carla Gugino, Tom Berenger & Maggie Grace. It’s scheduled for release on November 19, 2010.
