This Week on DVD & Blu-ray (09-25-12)

September 27, 2012

Believe it or not,  “Marvel’s The Avengers” is NOT the only release out this week! What with all the publicity for it, one would think so though. There’s quite an assortment out there actually.
From indie films (domestic or foreign) that have already worked the festivals or VOD/pre-theatrical availability outlets (“Klown”, which has been likened as a Danish “The Hangover” and “The Samaritan” one of two non-theatrical Samuel L. Jackson releases) to films that saw limited release early this past summer (like Whit Stillman’s “Damsels in Distress”). Also out this week is the 1982 black comedy “Eating Raoul” which is getting the Criterion treatment. It’s a film that became somewhat of a cult classic on home video in the 80s and then went to off-Broadway in the 90s.

For Netflix users, some of the titles listed below are now avail. on Watch Instantly. They are: “Klown”, “The Tall Man” and “Jock the Hero Dog”.

Also out this week is the 15th title in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies, “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1”, which is based on FRank Miller’s seminal mini-series from 1986. Known for its gritty and violent take on the iconic DC character, the story follows an elder Bruce Wayne/Batman (voiced by Peter Weller) forced out of retirement to deal with the punks and scum currently ravaging Gotham. It’s also known for providing the first girl Robin and includes unique takes on classic Batman villains like Two-Face and The Joker (voiced by Lost’s Michael Emerson). I heard good things about it, so I anticipate checking it out.

In the New-to-Blu-ray category there are some 90s movies, like  “The American President” and “Arachnophobia” and a Wong Kar-Wai 2-pack (of “Fallen Angels” & “Happy Together”). Disney releases their underrated gem, “The Great Mouse Detective”. And two impressive collections are available as well, “Lone Wolf & Cub” and “Bond 50”, which collects all the 22 Bond films in celebration of the character’s 50 years on the big-screen.

That’ll do for this week. Enjoy the Rundown!
