This Week on DVD & Bluray (08-10-10)

August 10, 2010

This week’s DVD/Blu-ray releases have a lil something for everyone. Of special note, are two Criterion Collections featuring the work of filmmaker and comic book aficionado Terry Zwigoff. Both his first film, 1986’s “Louis Bluie” about blues and string band musician Howard Armstrong and then there’s 1994’s “Crumb” about the noted underground comic artist R. Crumb and his family. Both are given the Criterion deluxe treatment for the first time. That along with “In the Shadow of the Moon” are my picks, after that it’s all up to you. As usual, go forth and conquer! Rent or purchase as you see fit! Here’s the Rundown….

The Other Guys (2010) **

August 8, 2010

written by: Adam McKay & Chris Henchy
produced by: Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, Jimmy Miller & Patrick Crowley
directed by: Adam McKay
rated PG-13 (for crude and sexual content, language, violence and some drug material)
107 min.
U.S. release date: August 6, 2010

The fourth comedy collaboration with actor Will Ferrell and writer/director Adam McKay gives us their absurd take on the buddy cop action genre. This time, Mark Wahlberg steps in for the John C. Reilly role, teaming up with Ferrell to deliver some comedic chaos amid urban explosions and plenty of collateral damage. McKay and Ferrell’s three previous films have gone from classic hilarity (“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy”) to grating overkill (“Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby”) to crude stupidity (“Step Bothers”), all free rein for Ferrell to establish his manic man-child antics. So, will this movie be more of the same, just with a different cast and genre?

Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) ***1/2

August 5, 2010

written by: Judd Winick
produced by: Bruce Timm, Bobbi Page & Alan Burnett
directed by: Brandon Vietti
rated PG-13 (for violent content and some drug references)
75 min.
DVD & Bluray release date: July 27, 2010
Twenty-two years ago, fanboys killed off Batman’s second partner in crimefighting in DC comic’s “A Death in the Family” storyline. Fans were complaining about Jason Todd, who would go on to become the second Robin. It was either their devotion to Dick Grayson, the first Robin, or their annoyance with Todd that led a 900 number light up with a thumbs down verdict. It was the first time readers were exposed to an emotionally raw Batman and the first time a superhero was murdered, in a phone-voting method, no less. But, with superhero comics being how they are, no one dies forever.

COMING SOON: August 2010

August 4, 2010

With one month left in the 2010 Summer Movie Season, this is it! It’s been a rough one, for sure. Some sequels didn’t do as well as hoped (“Iron Man 2”)while others delivered the expected goods (“Toy Story 3”). At least we had our work cut out for us (“Inception”) and if we looked hard enough, we could find some real gems (“Winter’s Bone). In the past, August has been an experimental summer free-for-all but lately there have been some fun surprises and all-out last stands.

Trailer Tuesday (08-03-10)

August 3, 2010

The Fall film season in the States is generally considered to be right after Labor Day till just before Thanksgiving. It’s also generally the time when studios start dropping some award contenders (but more will come toward the very end of the year) and some thrillers. Here’s a handful that’s really just a glimpse of what we’ll see in theaters after the dog days of summer.

Dinner for Schmucks (2010) **1/2

July 30, 2010

written by: David Guoin & Michael Handelman (source material: Francis Veber)
produced by: Walter F. Parks, Laurie McDonald & Jay Roach
directed by: Jay Roach
rated PG-13 (for sequences of crude and sexual content, some partial nudity and language)
114 min
U.S. release date: June 30, 2010

The supposed idiots we see in “Dinner for Schmucks” are deemed so by corporate big-wigs who invite them to a lavish top-secret dinner, just to make fun of them. Real nice. It becomes quite obvious to anyone who’s seen a movie or two (especially in the dumb schlub genre) that the real schmucks will eventually be revealed. Plenty of laughs come from the two leads here but there’s also a good amount of funny from a solid supporting cast and some dead mice that almost steals the show from them in this hilariously stupid yet somewhat uneven comedy.

Countdown to Zero (2010) **

July 28, 2010

produced by: Lawrence Bender

directed by: Lucy Walker

rated PG (for thematic material, images of destruction and incidental smoking)

90 min.

U.S. release date: July, 23, 2010

All documentaries have a purpose and a perspective and are rarely entertaining. That’s at least my experience. And that’s fine when many of then are intended to educate, create awareness and motivate some form of action on the part of the viewer. Yet at the end of this film there’s not much we can do about nuclear proliferation or the fact that it is easier now to create a nuclear weapon than it was back in the cold war. What exactly are we to do with this information except be scared?

Trailer Tuesday (07-27-10)

July 27, 2010

This past weekend in San Diego, much of the pop culture world converged (or at least paid attention to from afar) at the Comic-Con International, or CCI, or SDCC….whatever ya wanna call it. That was the place to be if you had to promote a popular television series, comic book, or a film currently in production. Originally just for comic book creators, it has become the place for studios, creators and actors to promote their work, make announcements and generate growing buzz. That being the case, this has also been the place where new footage and/or trailers are shown as well.

Let’s look at what new trailers were shown there over the weekend as well as some others that have recently surfaced….
