Trailer Tuesday (07-27-10)

July 27, 2010

This past weekend in San Diego, much of the pop culture world converged (or at least paid attention to from afar) at the Comic-Con International, or CCI, or SDCC….whatever ya wanna call it. That was the place to be if you had to promote a popular television series, comic book, or a film currently in production. Originally just for comic book creators, it has become the place for studios, creators and actors to promote their work, make announcements and generate growing buzz. That being the case, this has also been the place where new footage and/or trailers are shown as well.

Let’s look at what new trailers were shown there over the weekend as well as some others that have recently surfaced….

This Week on DVD & Bluray (07-27-10)

July 26, 2010

It’s a pretty rough week at the DVD/Bluray shelves.  As far as broadly known releases, the 3D-bomb Clash of the Titans is out of DVD and Bluray, as well as the futuristic action film Repo Men.  Two independent films you might not have heard of, Vincere and The Art of the Steal, come recommended from Keeping It Reel.  Other than that, there are plenty of reissues and new-to-Bluray oldies that should get you through the week.  Enjoy!

Salt (2010) ***

July 22, 2010

written by: Kurt Wimmer & Brian Helgeland
produced by: Lorenzo di Bonaventura & Sunil Perkash
directed by: Phillip Noyce
rated PG-13 (for intense sequences of violence and action)
100 min.
U.S. release date: July 23, 2010

Who is Salt? That’s what every ad and billboard for director Philip Noyce’s (“Patriot Games” & “Clear and Present Danger”) return to big-budget action asks. And whose face is plastered on these ads? Angelina Jolie. So, than guess who Salt is? Very good. Those ads have made me chuckle for months seeing as how we don’t really need to wonder what character Jolie is playing. Having finally seen the movie, it’s become quite clear that such a question has a double meaning. Indeed, who Salt is beyond her name becomes the real question and actually what she is appears to be a more appropriate question as well as the driving force of the movie.

This Week in DVD & Bluray (07-20-10)

July 19, 2010

Among the lot of DVDs and Blurays releasing this week, there are several that have Keeping It Reel reviews, so we’ll be linking those so you can get extended descriptions and insight for those titles.  One film that David & I both view as one of the top 5 films of 2010 (so far) is Bong Joon-Ho’s Korean masterpiece Mother.  In addition to that, there are several wider-known films coming out as well: The Runaways, The Losers, and Cop Out.  If you like documentaries, one of last year’s Academy Award nominees, The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, is available for you viewing pleasure, too!  Enjoy!

Inception (2010) ****

July 15, 2010

Written by: Christopher Nolan

Produced by: Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas

Directed by: Christopher Nolan

Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout

148 mins

U.S. Release Date: July 16, 2010 (wide)

Christopher Nolan, arguably the best filmmaker of the 2000s (Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight) kicks off the new decade in style with Inception, a dreamy psychological thriller that deals with physical turmoil within the confines of one’s subconscious.  The film is about professional thieves that infiltrate subjects’ minds to “steal” information as opposed to conducting interrogations.

Nolan is famous for his mind-bending thrillers that typically feature slow-burning story lines with masterful twist endings.  After several films that fit into this particular genre, has Nolan outstayed his welcome?  Are broad audiences receptive to films that don’t necessarily spell out everything for them?

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010) *1/2

July 13, 2010

Written by: Lawrence Konner, Mark Rosenthal, Matt Lopez, Doug Miro, and Carlo Bernard

Produced by: Jerry Bruckheimer

Directed by: Jon Turteltaub

Rated PG for fantasy action violence, some mild rude humor and brief language

111 mins

U.S. Release Date: July 14, 2010 (wide)

Walt Disney Pictures, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Jon Turteltaub, and Nicolas Cage team up, once again, to present the feature-length extrapolation of the classic Disney story “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”.  You may remember it from the short piece in Disney’s Fantasia, where Mickey Mouse puts on a magical hat only to animate a bunch of brooms, mops, and soap buckets to clean his master’s work space.  However loose of an interpretation it may be, the film adapts this story to tell one of a young boy who has a special power and the potential to become the greatest sorcerer that ever lived.  The Sorcerer’s Apprentice features Nicolas Cage as a sorcerer, a hard-thumping pop soundtrack, and a tweenie love story, but is there enough entertainment to bring the film up to a positive overall experience?

This Week on DVD & Bluray (07-13-10)

July 12, 2010

Nothing epic to write home about for this week’s dump of DVDs and Blurays.  Better known new-to-DVD titles include: The Bounty Hunter, Greenberg, Chloe, and Our Family Wedding.  Luckily there are finally some solid flicks out at the theater right now.  This may be the week when you should get out of the sun and into the cool theaters instead of getting a new DVD.  You may still want to check out Greenberg though.  Also, the Bluray release of Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia should get you psyched for the release of Inception this week!  Enjoy the rundown!
